Equestrian Guide would advise anyone when dealing with wounds to seek medical advice.
Incised or Clean Cut
This is caused by a knife, razor or glass
Theses tends to be small cuts smaller than 25mm long. These small cuts tend only to need cleaning with an antiseptic solution, if the cuts are longer or deeper then a vet will be required to put in some stitches so the skin can knit together.
Lacerated
This is caused by Barbed Wire or projecting nail
Small lacerations such as scratches only need cleaning with an antiseptic solution and leave to heal naturally, however if the laceration is deep, then a vet will be required to give an injection of antibiotics.
Bruised or Contused
This is a blow or kick
For a bruise the best course of action is to cold hose, hose area with cold water or to use an ice pack on the area as this will also reduce swelling and heat.
If your horse has a haematoma then you will need to call your vet. If the haematoma is large then your vet can drain it.
Puncture
This is caused by Thorns or nails
If the object that penetrated the foot is no longer in the foot then you will need to poultice the foot, to draw out any dirt or infection that the object has caused.
If the object is still in the horses foot then you will need to contact your vet.
It is advisable with any injury to consult your vet.
