Tacking up with a cavesson noseband and martingale

The description below is for a horse tied up to a wall. Depending on where you are tacking your horse up will depend on what item of tack you put on first.

If your horse is in the stable then put on the bridle first then the saddle so you have full control of your horse.

1) As this horse has a martingale it needs to be put onto the horse first, so un-clip the lead rein place the neck strap over the horses head making sure all buckles are away from the horse and the ring are pointing towards the head. Clip the lead rein back onto the head collar.

2) Take your numnah or saddle cloth and place it so the front is on the horses withers.( it can always be moved backwards )

3) Gently place the saddle on top of the numnah, lift the numnah up into the channel of the saddle, then gently tighten the girth, passing the girth through the martingale and do up.
Always use the 1st and either 2nd or 3rd girth strap (because the 1st strap is strongest)
Always pass the girth strap through the top hole of the girth buckle.

4) Place the head collar around the horses neck, keeping the knot done up. Then stand on the left hand side of your horse holding the bridle in the right hand. Bring the bit up to the horses mouth, placing your left hand flat under the bit gently push upwards. Your horse should accept the bit, then place the headpiece over your horses ears, remove the forelock from underneath the browband. Check that the noseband is straight the place straps under the cheek pieces and do up ( to get two fingers in under front of noseband)
Then do up the Throatlash this needs to be done up so you can fit 4 fingers in under the strap when they are placed on the cheek bone.
Replace the head collar

5) Any boots that are needed can now be added with the safety that your horse is tied up.
