When grooming your horse, if you stick to a routine then you
won't end up forgetting to do something, if you start with picking
out the feet, always remember to stand to one side so you can
move if the horse try's to kick, working from heel to toe, always
remember not to put the hoof pick on the frog as this is a soft
area of the foot.
Then moving onto the mane and tail; for everyday grooming, it's
a good idea to use a body brush or your fingers as this will
not break the hair as much as a comb.
When brushing the mane work from behind the ears down the neck
towards the withers.
When brushing the tail always stand to the side as your horse
could kick out, work from top to bottom, brushing only small
sections at a time.
The horse in the picture is a out kept pony, this means he lives
out at night as a result of this I'm trying to keep as much
natural oil in his skin to protect him against the weather,
this is why I have choosen a Dandy Brush.
Always brush from front to rear of the horse working with the
hair, this will remove dust and dirt.
When brushing the head, always remember this is a very sensitive
place on your horse, so it's a good idea to untie your horse,so
if he pulls back, he won't injure himself. Place yourself to
one side keeping your free hand over the pony's nose, so you
can reach him.
